About IPL 2014
So its that time of the year, all cricket lovers in india gear up for 2 months long IPL t20 extravaganza to happen around india during April, May 2014. Yes, the most popular T20 tournament IPL (Indian Premier League) is here soon. IPL makes it to seventh season in row despite many controversies and changes every year so far. Probably that adds more interest factor to the tournament since it is always in news for some good or bad reasons from players, team owners and BCCI.
None would have forgotten the circumstances in which the IPL 6 came to close in Kolkata Eden Gardens, It is not that domestic giants Mumbai won the IPL for the first time, but for various other shocking reasons like spot fixing scandals from players, and betting allegations towards the team owners. Though the fans were deeply disappointed, nothing seems to have been fixed or changed since then.
With many issues still pending from previous edition of IPL, it will be very interesting to see how IPL governing council serves IPL season 7 to ardent cricket fans all over india and abroad. Lets hope that some integrity is restored and BCCI makes steps to run this year’s IPL season a clean tournament.
As some or other franchises run into problem with BCCI every season, this time Pune warriors were shown the door due to payment irregularities. So IPL 2014 will be back to 8 team affair, same like it was in first season on 2008.
To add more to IPL ‘s known problems, India’s general elections will coincide with IPL 2014 that means the schedule of IPL 2014 will be subject to some changes. There are rumors that some of the matches may be shifted to South Africa and Srilanka. Stand-off with South Africa seemed to have improved after the recently concluded tour of Team India to South Africa.
When IPL was launched in 2008, it was announced that all players will go for fresh auction for IPL 7. but after the recent meeting with all franchise owners, it was agreed that each franchise could retain up to 5 players from their squad and will have one right to match (RTM) card. Which meant when a player from a franchise is bought by another franchise, home franchise have the rights to buy the same player for the said amount. So in a way, each franchise could retain up to 6 players from the squad, usually that is the number that makes the core of the team in any IPL franchise.
Teams had announced the list of players that they have retained for IPL 2014 before the auctions took place in bangalore on Feb 12,13. This rule means that most of the stronger franchises like CSK, RCB and MI were already set to continue to be same, while other franchise will struggle to match these top teams.
IPL Auction was an exciting two days event prior to IPL 2014, with Yuvraj (14 crores), Dinesh Karthik (12.5 crores) and Kevin Pieterson (9 crores) attracting huge amounts. Most of the teams have bought players of their interest to make up their squad for IPL 7 and there have been many surprises of key players being unsold, lesser known players being bought for huge amounts etc.. Just the same surprise element you would attach with IPL every year.
